Paris la ville

Paris est la capitale de la France et le chef-lieu de la région d'Ile-de-France. Cette ville est construite sur une boucle de la Seine. Ses habitants sont appelés les Parisiens.

Connue dans le monde entier pour ses monuments et sa vie artistique et culturelle, Paris est aussi une ville importante dans l'histoire mondiale, un centre politique et économique majeur, ainsi qu'un point de passage pour les transports internationaux. Paris est la capitale mondiale de la mode et du luxe.

En 2004, la population de la ville de Paris était de 2 144 700 habitants d'après l'estimation de l'INSEE au sein de ses limites administratives. Néanmoins, la ville s'est largement agrandie au-delà de ses frontières au cours du XXe siècle. Son air urbaine, qui inclut l'agglomération et la couronne périurbaine, comprenait 11,1 millions d'habitants en 1999^[2].

L'agglomération parisienne est, avec celle de Londres, la plus importante d'Europe. En nombre d'habitants, elle est aujourd'hui très largement dépassée par des mégalopoles asiatiques ou latino-américaines.

La devise de Paris est Fluctuat nec mergitur (« Il est battu par les flots sans être submergé »). Elle évoque le Scilicet, navire représenté sur le blason de la ville et symbole de la puissante corporation des Nautes ou des Marchands de l'eau, gérante de la municipalité au Moyen Age. La patronne de la ville est Sainte Geneviève, qui aurait convaincu Attila d'épargner la ville au V siècle.
