Béret français

Contrairement au idées reçues, le béret n'est pas d'origine basque mais béarnaise : le mot béret provient en effet du nom béarnais berret.

À l'origine, c'était l'apanage du berger : protecteur contre le froid, ou la pluie, il servait à ramasser les champignons, ou comme récipient pour les châtaignes chaudes afin d'éviter de se brûler au coin du feu.

Contrary to the generally accepted ideas, the beret is not Basque origin but inhabitant of Béarn: the word beret comes indeed from the name inhabitant of Béarn berret.    In the beginning, it was the prerogative of the shepherd: guard counters the cold, or the rain, it was used to collect mushrooms, or like container for hot sweet chestnuts in order to avoid burning itself with the corner of fire.
